LOST TV self-guided tour in O'ahu

If you are a LOST fan, going to Hawaii to visit the film locations of LOST could be a good idea for your next vocation.

Tours run by local tour guides in Hawaii cost you $300+ USD for a full day tour or $150+ USD for a 4 hour tour. If you like to sit in a van with other LOST enthusiasts going from site to site, that's fun. However, if you would like to take an adventure to discover more than what the tour guides have to show you and be in control of your time, a self-guide tour would be very cool memory of your trip. After all, unless you live in Hawaii, you don't get opportunities like this often, so why rush or choose to be told to get on the van just because the tour company had to drive you back to the hotel before sunset?

Before I took off to Hawaii for the second time for my vocation in 2010, as a big time LOST fan I knew that I had to visit the film locations. After going through web site to web site, blog to blog to compare pricing the quality amount tours, I came across two websites that guide me to most of the locations.

http://www.lostvirtualtour.com/

This site lists most locations by episode and by geography. The amount and quality of information listed on this site is amazing. I would say 95% accurate. I was able to find most of the sites using the information on the site.

As usual, about.com provides handy tips, so it does on this one. While you will be able to find most locations on lostvirtualtour.com, some of the locations are tricky to get to. For example, I miss the entrance to the waterfall where Sawyer and Kate found the sliver case on the bottom of the pond several times. about.com is more a how-to-get-there guides that you will find very handy when you know you are near the location but just can't see it.

A lot of locations are in fact private properties. The local tour will drive you there to the point that's close enough for you to take photos from the van without letting you get off. In Hawaii, celebrities are left alone (a local lady tells me), so just like you and me, they all deserve a little peace and quite, and that is why the tour companies do that.

I put together a map on Google that shows you most of the public locations in O'ahu island. It will take you about a day to visits all of them if you drive (do get a rental car when you go to Hawaii, you get decent cars for the price of a compact car you get in the city). Note that I only mark scenes that repetitively shown in the show and are city properties. I manage to copy and paste description to each location but some are rather messy. I promise I will stylize them when I have a chance.

Enjoy! and I hope you have a good time in Hawaii.
